THE VOICE BEHIND THE VISION
Malik Jarrell-Miller
Student. Speaker. Voice for Detroit's Future.
Malik Jarrell-Miller
My name is Malik Jarrell-Miller, and I’m a student at Wayne State University — but more than that, I’m a product of Detroit, shaped by its struggles and strengthened by its spirit.

Growing up in my community, I faced the kind of challenges many of us know too well — financial instability, loss, anxiety, and the weight of uncertainty. There were times I didn’t know where my voice fit in this world… until I realized I had to give it meaning myself. For a long time, I didn’t believe in my own potential, because I didn’t have a clear image of what “success” could look like — not for someone like me.

I pushed myself hard, sometimes too hard. I overworked, I stumbled, I made choices I’m not always proud of. But even when I felt like I was sinking, I found a way to float. I kept going.

Now, I move with purpose. I’ve learned to carry both my pain and my progress. I show up not just for myself, but for those who feel like dreamers in a world that’s trying to break them. I’m here for the kids who come from where I come from — the ones trying to make something out of nothing. The ones trying to make it mean something.

I represent what struggle, sacrifice, and relentlessness really look like. And I’m committed to pouring back into the same community that raised me, the one that gave me a reason to keep going.
This isn’t just about me — it’s about all of us.
